Premier League clubs on alert after security breach at Fulham FC

Police are investigating a security breach at Fulham Football Club after a mobile phone was found taped under a desk that may be linked to bribery or a gambling scam.

Suspicions were raised after CCTV footage showed two suited men who gained entry to the Craven Cottage ground ahead of last week’s game with Tottenham and are believed to have left unchallenged. The phone was found the day before the game taped underneath the desk of BT Sport’s set on the TV gantry.

It is thought the phone was either being lined up to record conversations in an extortion or bribery attempt, or possibly to gather real-time information on events inside the closed ground several seconds before the pictures would be transmitted on TV.

The discovery of the phone led to the Metropolitan Police launching an investigation. The Met told the Daily Mail: “There have been no arrests and enquiries continue”. Fulham Football Club say they are assisting police. BT Sport declined to comment.

The rest of the Premier League has now been placed on alert to guard against a similar security breach amid fears that an organised crime unit is targeting clubs across the division.
